The Council is supposedly designed to guarantee the ‘security and demilitarization’ of Gaza.
On Tuesday, Norway rejected participating in the Peace Council promoted by U.S. President Donald Trump to oversee the ceasefire plan in Gaza, considering the initiative a challenge to the role of the United Nations (UN) and the structures of international law.

Norwegian Foreign Affairs Secretary Andreas Motzfeldt stated that accepting the invitation would be “completely impossible” not only for Norway, but for most European states that consider international law a cornerstone of their foreign policy.
The European Commission confirmed that the European Union was invited, although it has not yet decided whether it will participate. Washington conceived the Peace Council to guarantee the “security and demilitarization” of Gaza after the Israeli offensive, but it has generated divisions.
While Germany has expressed its willingness to participate in the Council, French President Emmanuel Macron rejected the proposal that could supplant UN positions, which prompted threats of new tariffs from Trump.
Meanwhile, Qatar agreed to participate: its Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, stated that “there are no alternatives” and that the most urgent task is to stabilize Gaza, ensure the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces, and allow the population to rebuild their lives.
The Peace Council, chaired by Trump, counts Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair as a prominent member. Among the invited leaders are Russian President Vladimir Putin, Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Argentine President Javier Milei, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Bin Abdulrahman warned that although the ceasefire has reduced the intensity of the Israeli offensive, killings continue, the truce is fragile, and implementing the peace agreement will require a sustained effort.
